Paul’s Contact with the Corinthian Church

The following reconstruction of Paul’s relationship to the church in Corinth helps to explain how his visits to the church relate to his letters to the church.

50–51	VISIT 1	Evangelizes Corinth on Second Journey (Acts 18:1–18)
	“He was there a year and a half, had Jewish opposition, but many Jews and gentiles were converted. Paul then leaves Corinth and goes through Ephesus on his way back to Caesarea (Acts 18:18–22).”
54	LETTER 1	“Previous” letter now lost (1 Cor. 5:9); perhaps a follow-up letter to his first visit”
	“Paul returns to Ephesus (Acts 19:1) and stays for three years (Acts 20:31). In Ephesus he receives a visit from someone from Chloe’s household (1 Cor. 1:11) reporting factions in the church, and he receives a letter from Corinth asking for advice and guidance (1 Cor. 7:1, 25; 8:1; 11:2; 12:1; 15:1; 16:1). Paul then writes 1 Corinthians in response (1 Cor. 16:8–9).”
54	LETTER 2	1 CORINTHIANS (Ephesus); Third Journey
	"Paul sends Timothy to Corinth on a special mission (1 Cor. 4:17; 16:10). A powerful opponent in Corinth attacks Paul, and Timothy is unable to deal with it (2 Cor. 2:5–11). Timothy returns to report this to Paul, who then goes to deal with the situation himself."
55	VISIT 2	“Painful” visit (2 Cor. 2:1) from Ephesus to Corinth and back
55	LETTER 3	“Tearful” letter (2 Cor. 2:4, 9; 7:8–9; 12:14; 13:1)
	“Paul probably writes this letter from Ephesus after a painful visit. It is carried by Titus. Afterward, Paul goes to Troas, hoping to meet Titus with the report about Corinth (2 Cor. 2:12–13). Unable to find Titus, Paul travels to Macedonia. There, in 56, Paul finds Titus, who gives a good report about the church (2 Cor. 7:5–8).”
56	LETTER 4	2 CORINTHIANS (Macedonia); Third Journey
	"This letter is carried by Titus to Corinth. Paul continues to defend himself against a rebellious minority in the church (especially in 2 Cor. 10–13) but there is a renewed joy and gentleness because most of the church has repented."
57	VISIT 3	Paul joins Titus in Corinth (Acts 20:2–3), spends the winter there, and writes Romans. After an intense period of conflict followed by reconciliation, this surely was a enjoyable time with the church.
